WW@W learning about the training or lack of training for jobs.

We have all come together

We have all come together as one to not only educate others on work safety but also make a change in all of the rules and regulations that are always broken.

Our Main Goal

Safety comes first Many of the girls in our group have never been fully trained for their positions. At age 17, one of our girls works for 6 hours straight with only one 10 minute break. Our main goal was to plan a workshop of teen worker safety for the other continuation school students in our district. We worked very hard in the planning of the event. Once it was planned, we prepared a presentation and traveled to another school to present our plan to a meeting of all of the principals of the 10 other continuation schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. We designed an agenda that would engage the other students, prepared our information and fielded questions from the principals. A district leader was so enthusiastic about our project that he said he would provide busing to facilitate the transporation needs of the  other schools.  This was huge. We were in the final planning stages for the event to be held March 25th. We designed and made our T-shirts, planned our menu, prizes for the other studnets to participate, had our agenda, games and information sessions set. We had arranged for guest speakers to speak from the Department of Labor, as well as from Cal/OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health  Administration. press releases were created for the Los Angeles Times and the Daily News. We were very excited. Then Covid-19 hit. School, as we knew it, was transitioned to online. Our event  was cancelled. Our team fell apart as we all tried to adjust to our new reality.

We worked very hard to make our workshop a reality, but it was not to be. We tried to set up online offerings, but our main speaker from the Dept. of Labor was not allowed to use ZOOM as a platform, and we could not make the Adobe platform accessible to our students, as our school is authorized to use ZOOM. At the end, there remains a core group of four women.

Work Smart, Work Safe!

Our motto!

Mission Statement

Overall, our goal is to simply educate our girls on workers rights. To make sure they are all treated properly and trained properly. he mission of Wooden Women at Work is to inform students and parents about teen health, safety, and worker rights in the workplace. We will make this information readily available by promoting May as Safe Jobs for Youth Month through a workshop for other students in our school district.Health and wellness-knowing how to stay safe and well keeps us productive in the workplace.

We saw too many fellow studnets get burned, cut or suffer falls at work. One of our students had boxes fall on her from a high shelf and suffered a concussion. We know that this is an area in which we can make a big difference.  With the pandemic of Covid-19 Virus, this issue brought on new and very serious concerns. We decided to switch to Live Smart-Live Safe and emphasize protocols to keep us all safe. This includes awareness of hand-washing, wearing masks and keeping social distancing. Our research faced us every day as we saw the daily rates of infection and the rate of deaths in our community, out city, out state, our country and the world.

Team Planning

We hope you visiting us has inspired you and helped you for your every  day life and work life. Our team met weekly on Wednesdays after school and different jobs were delegated to cover the many areas we identified. Much time was spent doing research, becoming familiar with safety measures, tips for teens and parents. We filled out our project planner to give every girl a main area of responsibility. Many of us were working in multiple areas. We mixed up our team to delegate groups that had one person of strength in an area with someone who didn't have the developed skills. This way  we could all learn from each other. Every meeting we reviewed team tasks, got reports and asked how we could help each other. We texted throughout the week to se what needed to be done. Often times, we quickly arranged meetings to take care of immediate needs that had deadlines to prepare for our event.
